For 30 years, Catawba Nation leadership has fought on many fronts to ensure a prosperous future for our citizens in the form of gaming. Fortunately, 2020 has been a year of success in securing this right! In March of 2020, the Department of Interior made the decision to take land in Kings Mountain, NC into trust with a provision for gaming. Though the EBCI did file a lawsuit against the federal government and requested an injunction to stop progress on this project, the US District Court in DC denied the injunction. Because of this, the Catawba Nation can move forward with the casino to be built soon.
Groundbreaking for the $300,000,000 facility started on July 22, 2020 in a closed ceremony to limit contact in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On July 24, 2020, Catawba Nation leadership celebrated this occasion with a socially distanced fireworks celebration hosted only for its citizens.
On August 28, 2020, leadership of the Nation, Kings Mountain, and Delaware North met to give Catawba citizens the first look at the new name and logo for Catawba Nation’s Two Kings Casino Resort. This name was created not only to celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Catawba Nation and its partnership with the city of Kings Mountain, but also to playfully acknowledge a winning hand when gaming. The name has been widely supported by citizens of the Nation.
